Cook Sausages in a Microwave Oven
|You can cook raw sausages in a microwave oven, from the packet, and they’re perfectly safe. When you cook sausages in a microwave oven, you don’t get a dark browned skin, in fact the skins, the sausage casings, peel away. However, you DO get a cooked sausage that is fully cooked and perfectly safe to eat. In short, the answer to the question “can you microwave sausages?” is Yes, you can!
- Pin It: Microwave Fresh Sausages
I will quite often cook fresh, raw sausages in a microwave oven if I want to make a quick sausage pitta snack, or I’ll pre-cook sausages before making a toad in the hole to speed up the cooking time, it’s also a great way to get sausages quickly pre-cooked before oven baking them. I find this is a great way to quickly make a sausage and egg sandwich for a packed lunch too!
Microwave Cooking Raw Sausages:
- Separate the sausages if they’re all joined as links.
- Prick the sausages and place them in a microwave safe dish – they need a bit of space round them, so don’t pile them high.
- Cover the sausages with a lid, or some cling film, or a sheet of kitchen towel.
- Microwave on high power (800 watts) for 1½ minutes, turn the sausages over and microwave for a further 1-1½ minutes.
- The skins will have peeled away, so you might prefer to pick those off and toss the casings in the bin! You can microwave sausages by removing the skins first if you prefer, but it’s easier to pick the cooked skins off once they’ve peeled away in my opinion.
- Once microwave cooked, you’ll notice the sausages have browned a little bit and changed colour from a light pink to a light brown, looking more appealing than they did when they were raw sausages! Simply drain off the liquid and either serve your sausages, or pop them into the oven or under the grill to brown if you wish. The photo below is the colour of my Lincolnshire sausages when only microwave cooked.
These microwave cooking instructions are for a few spaced out sausages – if you’re cooking more sausages then they might need cooking for a little longer, another minute or so – you will be able to tell from the look of them that they’re cooked! The sausages should never be pink in the middle.
