If you’re stuck for time, or appliances, then you might wonder “can you microwave frozen fish cakes?” They can take ages if you oven bake fishcakes, or fry them in a frying pan…. but what happens if you microwave fishcakes? Is that a thing?
Well … let’s find out! Of course, microwaving fishcakes, which are intended to have a firm and crispy breadcrumb outer layer does mean that you will have to compromise on that crunch. But you can cook fishcakes in a microwave and serve them up on a plate as “dinner” 🙂
I’ve been microwaving fish cakes for years and today I cooked two from a 10 pack of Ocean Trader Breaded Cod Fishcakes that I picked up in Lidl.
How to Microwave Frozen Fishcakes:
- Place the frozen fishcakes on a microwave safe dish – they should be laid separately, not overlapping.
- Cover the dish and microwave on high power for 1 minute.
- Flip the fishcakes over and microwave on high power for another minute.
- Flip the fishcakes over and microwave on high power for a third minute. After 3 minutes they should be cooked – just touch them to check they hot and, if not, give them another little blast.
Notice they’ve changed colour:
Serve! Today I served my microwaved fishcakes with microwave cooked oven chips and microwaved baked beans!
Can you microwave fishcakes? The answer is YES, I do it all the time…. You will notice that they do change colour, they do darken a little – and the outside stays a little crispy.
Which Fishcakes Can You Microwave?
Personally, I’ve microwaved all sorts. From the Iceland 20/£1 bags, through to the pricier/fat fishcakes costing 2/£2 or so! For fatter fishcakes, simply add another 1 minute of microwave cooking time. The taste is the same, it’s just a little of the “crunch” factor that you lose when cooking fishcakes in a microwave oven, but if you can live without that for the sake of convenience then, as they say, “it all goes down the same way”!
