Microwave omelette makers don’t tend to work well at all, so I ditched mine years ago – and switched to what I think is the best way to make a microwave cheese omelette using easily obtainable and standard kitchenware. You can use and adapt whatever you’ve got for now, keeping an eye out for “the perfect dish” in time.
The best way to make a microwave cheese omelette is to use the microwave to make the omelette flat and whole and round, then add the cheese filling and microwave it until the cheese has melted, then flip it over in half to enclose your omelette filling.
For a 2-3 egg cheese omelette I’ll usually use a simple silicone sponge cake dish. What’s great about this is it’s easy to store in the cupboard and will be used for other things in the kitchen, so it’s not a “one use gadget” cluttering up the space. I also like the way it bends, so I can just use that property to fold the sponge case over when I fold the omelette in half!
What you need is a flat dish (it doesn’t have to be round), that has no ridges on the base – if the base has any ridges then the egg mix will tend to set their first making it muckier to get it out of the dish when you’ve finished.
Ingredients:
- 2-3 eggs, beaten
- 30-50 grams Cheese of your choice, grated or sliced thinly so it melts quicker
- Optional splash of oil, although silicone baking dishes don’t stick
Microwave Omelette Method:
- Oil your dish if you wish, this is just to prevent the omelette sticking and isn’t needed for the omelette to cook.
- Beat your eggs and put them into the dish. Microwave on full power (700 watts) for 30-45 seconds until the edges start to form. Break up the edges and give the egg mix a stir.
The microwave will naturally cook the egg from the edges to the centre, so you need to break it up every 30 seconds or so to enable the egg to set. It will be lumpy, that doesn’t matter. Keep microwaving and stirring/breaking up the egg at 30 second intervals until it’s close to being fully set. - Add your cheese and microwave on full power (700 watts) for about 1 minute. By this time the cheese will have melted. Now continue to microwave your omelette for about another 30 seconds or so, you’ll see it growing!
Note: overcooking an omelette in a microwave oven will give you a dry omelette, you don’t want that, but you do want it to be fully cooked and the cheese filling melted … you’ll be a pro for how you like it done after you’ve cooked 2-3 of these!
- Fold your omelette over in half so you have a cheesy filling. I will usually then fold it over again, as a stack of quarter shapes, to free up plate space for the rest of what I’m serving.
- Serve with your favourite omelette side dishes!
Today I served my cheese omelette with chips and beans.
The chips were microwaved frozen oven chips and I microwave cooked beans in a mug.
Microwave Cheese Omelette with Chips and Beans:
In order to cook this in one microwave you’ll need to stagger the cooking so it all comes together at the same time, this is how I’d usually do this:
- Microwave the chips for 8-9 minutes, cover and set aside.
- Microwave the beans for 1 minute, cover and set aside.
- Make the microwave cheese omelette – and after you remove that from the microwave oven put the chips back in for one final minute to ensure they’re piping hot.
Meal Cost: 60p
This is a good, filling, meal containing plenty of protein. It is all cooked entirely in the microwave oven in under 15 minutes.
Two eggs cost 16p, 1/3rd of a tin of baked beans is 8p, 250 grams of oven chips are 15p = 39p. Then there’s just the cost of the cheese, which will depend on how much you use and the price of that. I’ve used £4.80/Kg mature cheddar cheese, so the cheese cost will be about 15-20p. All in, that’s about 60p for everything on the plate.
Omelette Filling Ideas:
You can cook your usual favourite omelette in this way, here are some simple omelette filling ideas:
- Cheese & Ham Omelette: Ham is already cooked, so as above, adding the ham in at the same time as the cheese.
- Cheese & Onion Omelette: I like to soften onions first, so will use my microwave to cook the onions first, then add the softened, or cooked, onion in with the cheese.
- Cheese & Tomato Omelette: Slice the tomato thinly and add it at the same time as the cheese.
