Aldi Wonky Veg, 4Kg Potatoes
|I wasn’t aware that Aldi sold “wonky veg” as they now term it – I’d certainly spotted a large bag of small potatoes when I passed through the other week, but I was looking for baking potatoes that day and I can only buy one bag at a time! But I’d seen them – so when I spotted a bag with that magical “half price” sticker on them, I walked a little closer, then grabbed them and thought “they’ll do for something”. You see, it’s all about the planning …. “they’ll do for something” indicates there’s a plan. There’s never a plan with my cooking. Meal planning for one simply doesn’t ever happen because I never know what I’ll fancy on the day!
So there I was, at home, with my half price wonky veg potatoes – all 4Kg of them….. 4Kg!! OMG, that’ll take some getting through.
These are small spuds. I tend to stay away from small spuds as they do take more peeling than larger ones. But, these were cheap and I’m a sucker for cheap. The usual price of the Aldi wonky veg potatoes is £1.50 for 4Kg. These were half price, so just 75p. That’s 19p/Kg.
However, with potato overload (and I’ve still got the last of the baking potatoes I bought two weeks ago) I now need a plan. It’s the wrong season for potato salad, but it’s the right season for slow cooking! To get through these 4Kg of potatoes you can shortly expect I’ll be cooking vegetable stews and some slow cooker mashed potato, which I’ll then freeze in portions.
*sighs* … sucker for a bargain, but making a rod for my own back here.
Verdict on Wonky Potatoes:
They are not significantly different from most other potatoes I’ve bought that were cheap. The trouble was that the bag was so large! There was way too much scrubbing, peeling and slicing required really.
As for taste/texture, again, these wonky potatoes were no different to any other cheap potatoes. Nothing special, but nothing wrong with them either.
I’d buy them again … IF … they were sold in smaller bags!
