Toad in the Hole Recipe
|Toad in the Hole is an English recipe made of sausages baked in a Yorkshire pudding. It’s quick and easy to put together and one of my favourite meals. I had some sausages that needed using up and I had milk, so making a toad in the hole seemed the best way to use both those. The size of this is a giant Yorkshire pudding, it could really have taken 3-4 sausages, but I only used two.
As a rule I don’t weigh out my ingredients for a Yorkshire pudding, I just do it by eye, but to make this Yorkshire pudding I used about 50 grams of plain flour, 1 large egg, a pinch of salt and under 1/4 pint of milk. This quantity is enough to make one Giant Yorkshire Pudding that can be baked in a 7″/18cm sponge tin (which is what I use as that’s what I’ve got).
I was half way through cooking this today when the phone rang and I got invited out for a walk in 20-30 minutes’ time, so I did have to rush it at the end and then wolf it down and go walking on a full stomach, so this isn’t the best Toad in the Hole I’ve ever made as I had to finish it off quicker than usual!
Toad in the Hole Ingredients:
- 50 grams plain flour (all purpose flour)
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 pint of whole milk
- pinch of salt
- 2 sausages
- oil for cooking
Make Toad in the Hole:
- Make up the Yorkshire pudding batter by beating the egg into the flour with the salt and adding the milk until you’ve got a smooth batter. Place the batter in the fridge for at least 20 minutes if you’ve got time. Yorkshire Batter Recipe.
- The sausages can be used raw, but I like to microwave the sausages for 2-3 minutes first to give them a head start and ensure they’re cooked. Microwave Sausages.
- Pre-heat the oven to 180-200°C and put a well oiled 7″/18cm sponge tin in the oven to heat the oil up.
- Remove the batter from the fridge and add a splash of cold water (1-2 tablespoons) and give the batter a quick beat.
- Add the sausages to the hot pan, pour the batter into the pan.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until the Yorkshire pudding has risen and browned.
I like to serve Toad in the Hole with baked beans, which is what I did today!
